The top 5 benefits of suspension training

Something I have started to introduce for my clients is suspension training. Suspension training (I use TRX which is probably the most well know suspension brand), is a highly portable performance training tool that leverages gravity and body weight to complete a huge variety of exercises.

So what are some of the benefits of suspension training – well here are my top 5:

1. You only need one piece of equipment

Instead of having to lug kettlebells, weights, dumbbells and other heavy equipment around, all you need is to take your suspension bands (OK maybe this is more of an advantage for me).

If you travel a lot or you like to train in the comfort of your own home, they are perfect as they are easy to set up, only weigh a couple of kilos and are so versatile to use.

2. You can make the moves easier or harder depending on how strong or fit you are

It doesn’t matter what level you are at, everyone can do suspension training. Just by changing your body position slightly, the load can be increased or decreased on your muscles meaning you have total control on how easy or hard you want to make the exercise.

Thousands of people of all fitness levels do suspension training – from everyday people who just want to feel and look their best to some of the world’s most elite athletes.

3. A complete body workout

Suspension training develops strength, balance, flexibility and core stability simultaneously. The instability the suspension system creates whilst you perform movements, means your core is constantly activated. Moreover, the functional movements means lots of muscles work at the same time providing a very comprehensive, all over workout.

4. Low Impact Exercises

Because of its suspended nature, suspension training is very low impact which means your joints are not put under much stress. In turn, this means there is a low risk of injury, allowing you to train as hard as you wish with less risk of causing or agitating a pre-existing injury. Great for people with knee or ankle issues.

5. It’s different!

If you are sick of weights, running and other stock standard exercises, suspension training is unlike any other technique for working out.  By combining suspension training with other activities, you will be able to get a great workout in a fun and new way.
