The top 5 ways to keep training when it gets cold

Exercise can be tough enough for the best of us but when it starts to get colder, wetter and darker, a lot of us go into hibernation.

However it is just as important to keep training during Autumn and Winter as it is in Spring and Summer. So if you are struggling to get keep that exercise routine going, read my top 5 tips below.

1. Train with others

This is my number one tip – you are always more motivated to exercise when you either train with a friend or in a group.

It can be so hard to find the motivation when it is just you – it is all too easy to either slack off or just cancel your next workout.

But if you feel you will let someone down, then it is harder to skip a session. Plus training with other people can be so much more fun, enjoyable and is a great way to meet like-minded people.

2. Use a Personal Trainer

If you can’t find someone to train with or you just don’t like getting sweaty with others, then using a PT is you next best option.

Not only have you got someone in your corner motivating you, checking your form, providing you with a good variety of workouts and ensuring you are challenged within your limits, but you have paid a chunk of money for the privilege! The last thing you want is to waste your hard earned cash by being a no show.

3. Train first thing in the morning

I know this sounds crazy especially in the cold weather but there are some great advantages to working out as soon as you wake up.

It is too easy to get distracted with meetings, work, and other commitments during the day. After work you are usually tired and often just want to get home and relax. And once you get home, it is really tough to get off the couch to visit the gym or go for a run.

So move first thing in the morning before your body even knows what is happening. It is the best way to start any day!

4. Buy some new gear

Whenever I buy a new outfit, I wear it the first opportunity I get!

It is the same with activewear – you want to show it off first chance you can. And because it is activewear, that means you have to start getting active!

With the colder weather here, now may be the perfect time to update your wardrobe and get some fashionable, comfortable and warm clothes to wear.

My tip, invest in good quality activewear, always use layers (especially when outdoors) and buy bright and bold colours to make you feel ready for action.

5. Remember those goals?

Those New Year goals may be long behind you but you should always have goals to keep you motivated throughout the year. Whether it is to maintain your workouts or to keep the weight off, keep aiming for those goals – and always remember why you started in the first place.

Keep in mind too that exercising during Autumn and Winter is is often more important than in the warmer weather. Over the cold months, we tend to eat more comfort food and move less which means we are more likely to pile on those unwanted kilos.

Trust me on this, you will always feel better after you train – even in the middle of Winter. Find something you enjoy and stick with it. After all, Summer will be here sooner than you think.
