The top 5 fitness trends for 2023

As we come to the end of the year, it is not only a chance to reflect on the past 12 months but also what is coming up in the next 12 months.

I especially like to think about what fitness trends are around the corner and how this will affect the way people train. So after considering many different ideas, here are my top 5 fitness trends for 2023.

1. Tabata training

Most of my clients know all too well that I am a big fan of Tabata training.

Quite simply it is a form of high intensity interval training (which has been around for decades) alternating between 20 seconds of intense exercise and 10 seconds of rest.

This training can be adapted to any fitness level and is a great way to super charge your cardiovascular health, build muscle, and burn serious fat.

Tabata training can be done with any exercise and because it is quite intense, it is a great way to get results fast.

2. Wearable technology

This has been on the top 5 of many fitness trends lists, year after year, and for good reason.

Wearable technology devices, such as smart devices and fitness bands, are ideal to help you track your health and wellness goals.

Originally watches just tracked the basics such as your heart rate and steps. Now newer devices are able to track a variety of fitness metrics and even provide guidance and feedback.

The main reason for their growing popularity is they allow you to take control of your health and track progress and change. Smart watches may become the official portable health management portal in upcoming years. You may even see smartwatch health feature trackers monitor data as prerequisites for future health check-ups.

3. Home gyms

When COVID hit and gyms shut down, many people turned to home gyms to continue their training. Dumbbells, barbells and kettlebells flew off the shelves as people invested in quality equipment for home workouts.

Today I still train a number of clients online where they can exercise in the comfort of their own homes using their own equipment.

Home gyms are bound to stay popular because it is just so convenient. Plus you save time and money and have greater privacy. And you never have to worry again about crowds and queuing up to use equipment.

4. Training outdoors

With the majority of people back in the office and the weather warming up, more people are looking to train in the great outdoors.

There are so many great benefits to training outside – you get some much needed Vitamin D and natural light invigorates and inspires you. You also enjoy enjoy a greater variety of workouts being in nature plus you find yourself in a better mood.

5. Digital detox

I read a recent article about how school teachers had won a pay rise for the right to disconnect from digital services.

Basically this means ignoring work calls and emails from principals and parents after school. Teachers will be encouraged to switch off their phones and computers when the school bell rings.

I can see this “digital detox” becoming popular across all industries and professions. People are starting to realise that taking social media breaks and disconnecting from technology on a regular basis is not only therapeutic but also attainable as a self-care goal.

It could be as simple as putting your phone in do not disturb mode, muting social media notifications and reverting to traditional alarm clocks so mobile phones can be tucked away at night. You can enjoy life outside your phones more holistically by setting healthier communication boundaries.
