The top 5 healthy sandwich ideas

The sandwich is considered to be the namesake of John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, because of the claim he was the eponymous inventor of this food combination. The Wall Street Journal has described it as Britain’s “biggest contribution to gastronomy”.

But enough of the history lesson, who doesn’t love a good sandwich? It is one of my favourite things to have for lunch. And they have come a long way from the old ham and cheese staple I used to have as a kid. So easy to make, so delicious and, when using the right ingredients, can be a very healthy well balanced meal.

So here are my top 5 favourite sandwiches (just a tip, always use brown or multigrain bread or wraps):

1. Traditional Turkey

Add some sliced turkey, some watercress, a slice of apple and a dab of cranberry makes this a crisp and sweet lunch time treat which is low in fat and high in protein.

2. Classic Chicken

You can’t beat a good old chicken sandwich. Perfect for using leftovers from a roast (just make sure you remove the skin). Instead of using butter use avocado, add some fresh lettuce, tomatoes and you have a healthy spin on a classic.

3. Royal Roast Beef

Again you can use  the leftovers of a roast beef meal for this sanger. Use some thin slices of beef, add some mixed lettuce, tomatoes and a dash of Dijon mustard. A great sandwich which is low in fat, rich in protein and naturally low in calories.

4. Terrific Tuna

Just use some tinned tuna, celery, bean sprouts and instead of mayonnaise, use plain Greek yoghurt. Mix it all together and you have a sandwich packed with protein, fiber, heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids and a variety of vitamins and minerals.

5. Excellent Egg and Salad

You know I am a big lover of eggs, so I had to include this onto my list. Hard boil an egg, chop it up and pack in some cucumber, cottage cheese (instead of mayonnaise), bean sprouts and grated carrots. If you want a bit of a kick, add some mild curry to the mix and you have a healthy and nutritious lunch at work or a much-needed snack during the day.
