The top 5 ways to stay on track with your fitness goals

Let’s face it, sometimes it is hard to stay focused and on track with our fitness goals. We all have those days where you could not be bothered training and all you want to do is veg out on the sofa and chow down some chips or ice cream. Or maybe you had a stressful week or a bad day at work and you feel like throwing in the towel as it all seems to hard.

If this sounds like you, let me inspire you with my top 5 ways to stay motivated and focused on reaching whatever fitness goals you have set for yourself.

1. Remember why you started

When you are finding it hard to muster up more motivation, remember why you started in the first place. You can keep fitspiration photos on your phone or write down your goals and put it in a place where you can see it every day.

By revisiting that really determined feeling you had at the beginning of your journey, you will be more motivated to keep going. Remind yourself you are getting closer to your goal with every workout.

2. Shake things up

A big reason why people fall off track with their fitness goals is because they get bored. By doing the same thing week in week out, not only do you get bored but your body eventually gets used to the training and you don’t make any progress.

This is why it is important to mix things up and switch up your exercises. Not only will this prevent you from reaching a plateau in your training but you won’t grow used to the same old workouts which will keep fitness exciting and fun. It also means you are constantly being challenged which will work out your mental game as well.

3. Track your progress

Monitoring your food intake and tracking your performance and physical progress is so important. Weigh yourself, take full body photos and do your measurements. Most people who stop exercising after a few months do so because they didn’t see results. Being able to physically see the changes you’ve made is one of the best ways to keep you motivated and on track.

Make sure you apply this to your diet too. It can be easy to fall off track with your fitness goals by not maintaining the nutritional side of things but by logging your food intake, you hold yourself accountable for everything that you consume, helping to eliminate poor eating choices.

4. Forgive Yourself

Give yourself a break if you fall off the wagon now and then – it happens to the best of us. Just don’t use that as an excuse to give up. Instead, forgive yourself and use this as fuel to be more determined to hit your fitness goals more than ever. Remember how good you felt and looked when you did exercise and let that drive you to keep exercising and staying healthy.

5. Reward yourself

There’s a reason why so many businesses have some form of a rewards program—they’re extremely effective at gaining repeat customers. By creating a rewards program around your workouts and reaching small goals, this will help you stay on track. Set a goal for yourself and choose a reward you get once you meet that goal. Try to choose non food-related rewards such as a massage, a new outfit or a movie. Whether your goal is to lose weight, lift a certain weight or exercise consistently for a period of time, knowing you have a new outfit, trip or treat at the end can do wonders to get you there.
