The top 5 healthy habits to improve your life forever

There are some things we should all be doing every day if we want to improve our mental and physical well-being, maintain a healthy weight and get the most out of life.

The best thing is these healthy habits don’t cost a cent but are going to give you huge benefits in all aspects of your life so let’s get started!

1. Move more

Aim for 10,000 steps a day.

We all know the huge benefits regular exercise brings. It protects you against almost every chronic disease you can imagine, gives you more energy, helps manage your weight and improves your mood.

But if you are just starting off or you don’t want to spend money on an expensive gym membership you may never use, then just focus on walking every day. Just walking will have a positive impact on your health and will set you up for more your next fitness challenge.

2. Eat more veggies

Aim for three big serves every day.

Australians just don’t eat enough vegetables so if you are looking to change your diet, this is a good place to start.

A diet rich in vegetables and fruits can lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, prevent some types of cancer, lower risk of eye and digestive problems, and have a positive effect upon blood sugar, which can help keep your appetite in check. Plus your body is going to love you when you feed it a variety of colourful and nutritious vegetables.

3. Get outside

Get 15 to 20 minutes of sun every day.

Now I’m not talking about baking yourself for hours in the middle of the day but more along the lines of getting out in the morning for under 30 minutes.

Not only will this give you some much needed Vitamin D and keeps your bones and muscles healthy, being in the great outdoors invigorates you for the rest of the day. Added to this it will help you sleep better and increases your immunity against many nasty diseases.

4. Drink more

Consume 2.5 to 5 litres of water daily.

Most people do not drink enough (and I am not talking about alcohol). But drinking water throughout the day has amazing benefits – not only will you feel fuller (so you won’t eat as much), but it flushes bacteria from your body, boosts skin health and maintains the health and integrity of every cell in your body.

5. Get more sleep

Aim for 7 to 9 hours good quality sleep a night.

This is a big one and may be the toughest one to do.

Getting the right amount of sleep is just so important – you will get sick less often, it reduces your stress, and you perform better at, well everything. Sleeping is important for your emotional health, gives you a stronger immune system and can even help you lose weight!
