The top 5 easy ways to get more exercise into your life

It is well known that we are just not getting enough physical exercise. In todays world it is recommended that each of us partake in 30 minutes of moderate intensity activity every day. However studies have shown only 60% of people are actually meeting these recommendations. Unfortunately around one third of us spend more than five hours sitting down a day, such as at home watching TV or sitting at a desk at work.

But no matter how busy you are, there is always time for some sort of exercise to fit into your day. Let me give you some ideas with my top five ways you can get your daily exercise into your life.

1. Reboot your commute

Unless you live in close proximity to the company, getting to work involves some form of travel – whether it is by train, bus or car. To get more exercises into your life, if you use public transport, think about jumping on at a bus stop or train station that is further from your home. If you drive then you could park your car in an area that will allow you the distance to walk for a reasonable period of time to and from work. You could even leave the car at home, reducing the stress of having to find a park at all.

2. Wearable technology

One of the most popular trends in fitness is wearable technology. This is a great way to monitor your activity and see where you could improve your level of activity. Are you taking enough steps each day? Are you moving every hour? Many of us in our sedentary lives no longer meet the minimum requirements for walking each day. Set your goals for the day (such as a on a FitBit or Apple iWatch) and monitor your progress and whether you are doing enough. You may be surprised!

3. Chores and housework

Doing chores and garden work may not seem like much, but you would be surprised how much physical activity you can fit in to tasks that already need doing. It can get the blood pumping and will leave you with a clean and enjoyable home to relax in afterwards.

4. Get the kids moving

Spending some time each day to get the kids outdoors and playing along with them is not only beneficial for your family time but also to your health. Helping them to train for sports can get you moving along with them and increase your daily physical activity.

5. Sporting teams

If you have a sports team close to where you live or work, then it may be time to join in the fun. There is nothing stopping you from joining a local team or even starting your own whether it is cricket, football, tennis, cycling or even a hiking group. Being part of a group of like-minded people who enjoy the same activities as you do is a wonderful way to get fit and healthy and make some friends along the way too.

These are just a few ways you can work some physical activity into your day to day life and stop spending so much of your time sitting down. So get moving and improve your health and well-being, after all we only live once.
